Okihiro is a professor of international and public affairs and the founding director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University. Professor Okihiro is one the founders of the fields of Asian American and comparative ethnic studies. His expertise in comparative ethnic studies stresses the idea of power and its location and articulations in human society for the dismantling of those hierarchies of race, gender, sexuality, class, and nation. Among his books are American History Unbound: Asians and Pacific Islanders (California, 2015), Pineapple Culture: A History of the Tropical and Temperate Zones (California, 2009), and Island World: A History of Hawai'i and the United States (California, 2008).)
