  • Information found: pages 407-408 ("John Marshall Harlan" born at Harlan Station, five miles west of Danville, Ky. in what is now Boyle County, Ky. Lived in Harrodsburg, Ky while his father served in the U.S. Congress, then moved with his family to Frankfort, Ky. Attended Centre College 1848, graduating in 1850 with honors. Graduated from Translvania University Law School in 1852, returned to his Frankfort home and was admitted to the bar in 1853. Elected county judge of Franklin County, Ky. in 1858. Moved to Louisville in February 1861 where he established a law firm with William F. Bullock. Served in the Civil War as a colonel, then elected attorney general of Kentucky 1863-November 1867. Ran as a Republican for governor of Kentucky in 1871 and 1875. Named to the Supreme Court; took oath of office as an associate justice on December 10, 1877. Served until his death at his home in Washington, DC on October 14, 1911, offering 1,161 opinions.)
